Sacroiliac Joint Block

SACROILIAC JOINT BLOCK or "injection" is a procedure that is very

commonly used to both diagnose and treat disorders of the sacroiliac

joint.  The joint lays deep underneath the upper buttock area on both

sides and fluoroscopy (real time multi-angle Xray), CT scan, or

Ultrasound is used to guide the needle into the joint.  This is a simple,

safe and effective way to diagnose and treat many disorders of

these joints.

HOW DOES IT HELP?

The joint is injected with a solution containing a class of anti-

inflammatory medication such as a long acting cortisone preparation,

and local anesthetic.  This will decrease inflammation in the joints

and allow healing to occur.

HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT RELIEF FOR?

In many cases, as when there is inflammation of the joint from a

fall or sprain of the joint, the relief after one or two injections may

be permanent.  In other conditions such as sacroiliac joint arthritis

the relief may be temporary.  If there is a high degree of temporary

relief from the injections but pain continues to reoccur then

SACROILIAC JOINT RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION may be used

for long term relief.
